This collection represents the activities of three generations of the Henderson family in Chilliwack. John Cotter Henderson (1853-1929) was the son of pioneer merchant Samuel Henderson. He settled in Chilliwack after taking his medical degree in Glasgow in 1886, becoming the community's first resident physician. His medical diplomas are included in this collection. Dr. Henderson's son, Harold Leslie Henderson, (Aug 29, 1893 - July 19, 1985), was a bookeeper who became Superintendant of the Borden Company's condensed milk plant in Sardis from 1939 to 1947. The collection includes business records from the plant. The I.O.D.E. financial records in the collection may have been his wife's. Harold Henderson's son Kenneth Stanley Henderson (Sept 18, 1929 - May 18, 1973) was editor of the Chilliwack High School newspaper and later a trustee of the Chilliwack Historical Society. The collection includes the High School yearbook and newspaper and a scrapbook documenting the activities of the Historical Society. The Henderson family papers were conveyed to the Chilliwack Museum and Historical Society by George Langbroek, the executor of Harold Henderson's estate, in 1985. Some of the items were presented to teh Kilby Provincial Park museum, which later transferred them to the Chilliwack Museum. Some artifacts in the collection were designated as Artifact Accession no. 986.25. The collection was arranged by Kristen Mundstock in July 1986 with a later inventory by Jim Bownan in Aug 1987. |
