Art Lengkeek was born in Bilthoven, Holland in 1932, as the eldest of seven children. At the age of 18, Art left Holland and immigrated to Canada on May 15, 1951. Art landed in Quebec City on May 25, 1951, after a 10-day trip across the Atlantic Ocean in an old Dutch troop transport ship. Traveling from Quebec City, Art found his way to New Westminster where he worked odd jobs to make a living. After four years in New Westminster, Art headed up north to Houston, B.C. where he met and married his wife, Hanna. The couple had seven children and raised most of their family there before moving to Chilliwack in 1969. In Chilliwack, Art was a politician who was active from around 1975, who helped to found the Ratepayers Association in 1976. In 1979, Art ran for the Chilliwack City Council. Along with dabbling in civic politics, Art has worked in the local construction industry and the real estate industry. Retired at the age of 72, today, Art is an avid hiker. Art has been a member of the City of Chilliwack's Trail Advisory Committee, who advises the City on the best ways to co-ordinate trail planning to inter-connect the many trails up and into the mountains. For his work, Art was honored by the city. On July 31, 2020, his friends in a volunteer community revealed a plaque in his honour on a bench on Mount Cheam, Chilliwack. The plaque reads: "Art Lengkeek / is an avid trail user and, at 88 years old, he still hikes Mount Thom regularly. Art has volunteered in our community for many years and has helped to maintain local trails to keep them safe for all of us to use. / Happy hiking Art / July 31, 2020". |
