This accrual to the Doug Nicol fonds consists of eleven series complied of research resources, personal notes and papers, committee meeting notes, and acquired maps and photographs. All this information is centered on the Chilliwack area. The major topics in this accrual are The Big History Committee (later The Chilliwack Story) research and development, and Chilliwack Cemeteries including Little Mountain Anglican Upper, Oddfellows (IOOF), and Carman United Church Cemetery tombstone recording. Other subjects covered include early settlers, geography, urban evolution, genealogy, and waterways and water sources. Doug Nicol, March 17, 1941 - November 20, 2003, was born in Vancouver, BC, March 17, 1949, the only child of Phyllis and Jim Nicol. He and Jan Nicol had three children; Tad Nicol, Susan Goldie, and Janice Nicol, and seven grandchildren. Doug remarried in 1995 to Anne 'Nancy' den Boesterd. Nicol grew up in Victoria, BC before moving to the Fraser Valley to complete his BA at Simon Fraser University in 1971, his MA at University of British Columbia in 1975, and work towards completing a PhD at UBC from 1973-75, and at SFU from 1992-94. Nicol was a historical geographer and professor. He taught at Douglas College in New Westminster from 1973-1977, and at University College of the Fraser Valley from 1977 onward, where he was also the head of the geography department. Nicol was an author and co-author on multiple publications including what would become The Chilliwack Story published after his death. Nicol was a member of the Chilliwack Museum and Archives' History Circle, an honorary life member and past board member of the Chilliwack Museum and Historical Society, founding member of the One Big History Committee, and the chair of the Cemetery Committee. Doug Nicol spent decades studying the history of the Lower Fraser Valley as well as genealogy. His main passion however was cemeteries and burial sites; in particular the Little Mountain Cemeteries in Chilliwack. |
