Admin/Biographical History |
The Chilliwack Outdoor Club is an organization dedicated to experiencing the natural environment of the Upper Fraser Valley. The club was originally founded in 1976, but did not generate strong membership until 1978, when they elected their first executive on October 25, 1978. Meetings were held once a month at the Chilliwack Senior Secondary School. The earliest minutes of the group are for February 1, 1980, with Bill Coughlin, Bob Stair, and Calvin West attending, and Marilyn Butler and Howard Park absent. The minutes of this meeting document the concerted effort made to promote the goals of the group in local media, as well as scheduling of coming events, costs of a club crest, showing of films, maintenance of a newsletter, and posting of financial statements. By 1987 the Outdoor Club had grown to a membership of about 100 people, with club members meeting every month to discuss planned hiking, canoeing and cycling trips, and in the winter, skiing. At these monthly meetings trip leaders gave details of the planned activity, such as the level of difficulty and the type of equipment required (AM 0831). Most Club excursions were full day trips, and were usually in the immediate area from the Chilliwack River Valley to Manning Park. An overnight trip weekend trip was planned about once per month, and extended trips of up to 10 days were planned a few times a year for skiing holidays, canoe trips and extended hikes. In addition to outdoor recreation, the club was also involved in trail maintenance. Since the late 1970s, the Chilliwack Outdoors Club has been working with the local community and organizations such as Greenpeace to promote environmentally friendly choices and politics. Some of their work included promoting awareness on whale hunting, selling old gear for community members, and promoting safety talks about international travel and survival. The original bylaws for the club were adopted in 2000 and have been updated at the AGM (Annual General Meeting) every year up until 2015. |
