Matthew Hall was born in April, 1825 at Dumeree, Ireland. According to his obituary At the age of 20 years he enlisted dating from July 25, 1845. Later he transferred to the Royal Engineers, which were then known as the Royal Sappers and Miners. He was married to Harriet Hall (sister of Royal Engineer William Hall, but no relation) in the town of Maidstone, Kent County, England, in 1857. He arrived in British Columbia in 1859, and was discharged at his own request at New Westminster, B.C., on Oct. 28, 1863. Sergeant Matthew Hall settled on a crown grant of 160 acres in the Sumas in 1866, District Lot 82. The couple had four children: Matthew J. Thomas, who married Anna Woodall Lewis; Elizabeth, who married Joseph Sturton; Susan H. who married Charles Ford, and Emily H., who married John Germaine. Matthew Hall passed away on April 22, 1914. |
