Provenance |
The Harrison House Hotel was built in 1892 at the corner of Wellington Avenue and Corbould Street, by Mrs. Matilda (Ryder) Harrison. She owned and operated the hotel until it's sale in 1907. The three storey hotel was a short buggy ride from Chilliwack Landing, and a four minute walk to the business district at Five Corners. It was built at a time when the community was growing and the commercial centre was shifting from the steamboat landing at the foot of Wellington Street to Five Corners. The hotel was known for its lawns, flowers, shrubs, and its meals and hospitality. A gardener tended to the flowers and shrubs and kept the lawns in perfect condition for croquet and tennis. Peach trees flanked the south wall of the three storey buiding, while on an acreage just down the road on Wellington, Mrs. Harrison kept a cow and grew vegetables and tree and bush fruits. |
