CM 4185 Abacus Finished two compartment wood rack; smaller, upper section has two rows of wood beads [counters]; lower has five; all beads on parallel bamboo [?] rods fitted into rack lengthwise; rack held together by brass corners nailed on; wood slat fitted lengthwise on rack back; center rod is brass. |

Abacus used by Chinese men employed at the British Columbia Hop Yard, Sardis at the end of the 1920s. An ancient form of calculator, the abacus can be used to perform calculations by sliding counters along rods or grooves. |
