Provenance |
Teacup and saucer were gifted to the donor. Donor worked at Valleyhaven Guest Home as Director of Activities and Volunteers in the 1979. Donor was hired at Valleyhaven to start activities programming and volunteer coordination at the home, something that was relatively uncommon at the time. Donor worked with other part time staff to complete her duties, and regularly coordinated with the volunteer bureau to bring volunteers to Valleyhaven. Donor oversaw up to 200 volunteers in total, and was in regular contact with the Chilliwack Progress to detail activities and events at Valleyhaven (The Chilliwack Progress, 6 Oct 1982, P. 31; 6 Jul 1983, P.23). Through the activities at Valleyhaven, donor forged many long-standing relationships with her clients, one of which was with Georgina Stewart. Donor met Stewart in one of her baking classes and got to know Stewart on a personal level. After Stewart passed away, her daughter gifted the teacup set to the donor as it had personal sentiment for the donor. Donor left Valleyhaven in 1989 to take care of her aging parents. Georgina Stewart was born on February 21, 1895 in Sardis and lived there all her life. Stewart married James Edward Braidner in 1916, who worked for the B.C. Electric Company (The Chilliwack Progress, 26 Feb 1975, P. 16). The couple moved briefly to New Westminster and Agassiz before returning to Sardis. Braidner died in 1929. In 1935 Stewart remarried to Alex Stewart, and the two farmed in Sumas until his death in 1960 (The Chilliwack Progress, 26 Feb 1975, P. 16). She was a lifelong farmer in the valley, farming for a total of 63 years. Stewart met the donor while staying at Valleyhaven Rest Home. The donor asked to borrow Stewart's teacup set, which she had displayed in a china cabinet, to which Stewart agreed, on the requirement that they would only be used for tea in a cooking class and then they would go back to her cabinet. Stewart passed away on November 18, 1989. |
