Provenance |
Semen ampules from the Chilliwack Artificial Insemination Centre. From "Down Country Roads" On April 18, 1944 the Chilliwack Dairy Herd Improvement Club was formed, though its name was changed to the Artificial Insemination Club September 5, 1944. The club's purpose was to provide artificial insemination services to dairy cattle breeders in order to improve the four cattle breeds used by local dairy farmers. The club's impetus to form occurred in 1939 when the C.B.C. broadcasted a program called the Canadian Farm Forum. An East Chilliwack Farm Forum was formed that year and it was from this group that an A.I. Club was eventually formed. Initially early techniques involved ejaculating semen from bulls and transferring 2 c.c. of semen to a glass tube for insertion into a cow. By 1954 freezing techniques allowed for longer storage of semen. This allowed clubs to exchange semen, allowing for greater diversity. As a result of this work the average milk and butterfat production for B.C. cows can be partially attributed to A.I. In 1986 the Chilliwack and Milner (near Abbotsford) Centres amalgamated and the Chilliwack A.I. Centre closed. |
